A LIL ABOUT THE LILS

On a fall afternoon in 1971, Maria Danly '74 joined seven other women beneath Princeton’s 1879 Arch. The ensemble broke into song, filling the space with a four-part arrangement of Ella Fitzgerald’s jazz classic, “How High the Moon.” The sound was so beautiful that it resulted in the creation of Princeton's first all-female a cappella group.

The Lils have changed over the past four decades, but their sisterhood and dedication to music remain steadfast. The group has established its presence on a worldwide stage, performing in exotic locales including Australia, the Bahamas, Hong Kong, Japan, Switzerland, Thailand, and Bermuda. However, The Tigerlilies have also performed extensively across the United States in Boston, Birmingham, Cape Cod, Cleveland, Dallas, Minneapolis, New York, North Carolina, San Francisco, and most recently, Miami.

Auditions for The Princeton Tigerlilies for all freshman and sophomore women are held at the beginning of each semester in 300 Henry Hall. To sign up for an audition, make an appointment with Molly Banes through Wase.com.

THE TIGERLILIES ARE NOT CURRENTLY BOOKING PERFORMANCES, AS PRINCETON UNIVERSITY IS CLOSED FOR THE REMAINDER OF THE SEMESTER. WE ARE DEVASTATED THAT OUR YEAR MUST COME TO AN END SO SOON, BUT WE UNDERSTAND THAT HEALTH AND SAFETY ARE ALWAYS A PRIORITY. DESPITE THE NATURE OF OUR CIRCUMSTANCES, THE TIGERLILIES ARE STILL DETERMINED TO BRING MUSIC AND JOY TO ALL OF OUR SUPPORTERS. OUR EP WILL BE RELEASED IN THE COMING MONTHS AS SCHEDULED. WE LOOK FORWARD TO PERFORMING FOR YOU AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.

BRIDGETTE

SCHAFER

Bridgette is an Alto 1 from Orinda, CA, just outside of San Francisco. She is known for her charisma and vibrant sense of humor, as well as her habit of unconsciously slipping song into normal conversation. In high school, Bridgette also sang in an all-female a cappella group and spent a year doing choir and musical theater. She doesn’t quite know what she’ll study yet, but is interested in Sociology, the Woodrow Wilson School, and Spanish! She has also been dancing for 11 years and definitely plans on getting a certificate in dance here at Princeton. Aside from the Lils room, the ceramics studio is Bridgette’s favorite spot on campus.

MEET OUR NEW LILS

CALLIE

GRUNWALD

Callie is a Soprano 2 from New York City! She fell in love with music because of her mother, a former Tigerlily, and hasn’t stopped singing since. Before joining the Lils, she was a member of the Metropolitan Opera Children’s Chorus, as well as her school’s very own all-female a cappella group. She also participated heavily in the musical theater program, most recently performing as Roxie in "Chicago!" At Princeton, she plans to study medical anthropology and global health. Besides music and medicine, her greatest loves are horseback riding, that’s what she said jokes, baking pies, and her golden retriever, Taylor.

HANA

WIDERMAN

Hana is an Alto I originally from Orange County, CA. She wanted to join the Lils because she believes that music can create incredible forms of connection between people. During high school, Hana started taking voice lessons at the New England Conservatory in Boston, and was a member of her high school’s co-ed a capella group. At Princeton, she plans to study English while also pursuing her passion for creative writing. She is a blog correspondent for The Half Mystic— a literary magazine that deeply engages with music in all its forms. Her favorite books are Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro and The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood.
